Frequently Asked Questions
about our Tutoring Services

This section is created so you can have answers to some of the more common queries about our tutoring services for high school students to help cope with their school work.

Q:
What subjects do you offer at Studyworks?

A: At the present moment, we offer English, English Literature, and Mathematics classes for international school students. These include but are not limited to English (RLA), English Literature, and Math (middle/high school, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, Statistics etc.,). If you don't see your subject listed, ask us. We may have a tutor who can help you with your subject.

Q:
How is the teaching done?

A: We follow the school curriculum closely, as after all, we know that results matter for parents and for students. However, we do try to expand the thinking boundaries of our students by giving them challenging and interesting work. For example, when teaching about a particular text type such as interviews, we asked the students to do research on euthanasia and write an "interview" with a famous euthanasia proponent/opponent. Every English lesson is built around a theme, and has a grammar point, vocabulary and either comprehension or composition practice in it. For mathematics, the teachers will lecture on the topic being taught and students follow up with practice in class to ensure that students understood the concepts and reasoning. The instructor will then assign exercises or practice questions to the students for homework so as to reinforce the learning. As they say in mathematics, practice makes perfect. Literature lessons are usually spend analysing the characters and plot of the texts. Literary terms are also taught and students are encouraged to use these terms when expressing their opinions in their essay questions.

Q:
Who are your teachers and what are their qualifications?

A:
Studyworks always hires the best teachers we can find. All our teachers possess a minimum bachelor's degree and are registered with the Ministry of Education in Singapore. Many are certified CELTA teachers. We also have ex-school teachers on our roster. At the end of the day, we believe the satisfaction of our students shows the dedication and commitment of our teachers to your child's education. In addition, we encourage all our teachers to constantly upgrade themselves and be informed of new teaching methods, as well as new ways of getting relevant points across to the students.

Q:
How much are the fees?

A: We charge between S$50 to S$70 per hour per person for group classes and between S$90 to S$110 per hour for individual lessons. Fees are collected 4 lessons in advance. That means, if your tuition class meets once a week, you will pay for one month's worth of lessons each time.

Q:
Why are your fees slightly higher than other tuition centers?

A:
Our prices may be more expensive than what you may find at other centres, but we believe we provide quality education and individualized attention for each student. Essays are not merely given a big tick and returned to the student, but are scrutinized and carefully commented upon so that the student can learn from his/her mistakes. When students are weak in a particular area, we give them additional help to improve, often at no additional cost. Your child's education is important. We recommend all parents to shop around for the best fit for your child and then compare Studyworks with them. Remember, education is an investment in a child's future. We strongly advise you to come to our office with your child for a discussion to see whether or not we can help him/her.

Q:
What happens if I miss a lesson?

A:
If you miss a lesson due to school activities or illness, the fee for that lesson will not be deducted. Instead, the fee will be rolled over to the next lesson. For example, if you have paid for 4 lessons in March, but attended only 3 lessons that month, then your next due date for the fees would be the second week of April instead of the first week of April. In other words, the fee from that one missed lesson in March is replaced by that of the lesson in the first week of April. It's that simple. If you miss a lesson, you don't pay for it. We don't charge you for missing lessons unlike other centers.

Q:
Can my child get extra help nearer to his/her exam dates?

A:
Yes. We often conduct extra lessons for students nearer to their exam dates. However, in a small group class, students come from many different schools and their exam dates may not be the same. We will choose a suitable time to conduct some extra lessons. Alternatively, if the teacher is available, your child may be able to schedule individual one-on-one extra lessons. The one-on-one tutorial fee will apply if this is the case.

Q:
Do you provide any assessment books and/or worksheets?

A:
We do our best to keep your costs down. Therefore, we do not specifically recommend any assessment books for our tuition classes. If assessment books are required, we will generally ask the students to purchase it themselves or to buy it through us. We provide students with worksheets for practice as well as for homework. Additional practice from assessment books is recommended but not required for tuition lessons in Studyworks.
